Couscous Salad

One of my favourite blogs to follow is www.toneitup.com. These girls are great! They always have such delicious recipes and great fitness tips. What I love most is that even though all their recipes are not for vegetarians, it’s really simple to substitute and make them veggie friendly. Here is one of my recent faves that I cannot get enough of: Continue reading

Put to the Test

Happy one year anniversary to me!

I cannot believe an entire year has gone by since I’ve become a vegetarian! Looking back, it is one of the best decisions I have made thus far. I feel cleaner, healthier and to most people’s surprise, full of energy.

One of the first questions people ask me when they find out I am a vegetarian is, ” Don’t you miss meat!?” or “Don’t you just crave it sometimes?” Every time I tell them, not even the slightest.

Funny enough, the mark of my one year being meat free, was also coincidentally an interesting “test”. This past weekend a friend of mine decided to celebrate his birthday at a Brazilian Steakhouse. Boy, was that ever interesting. Let’s just say, it took only about 0.01 seconds of my being there for me to confidently conclude I do not miss meat in any shape or form.

Trying Something New

Part of my attempt at being a healthy vegetarian includes trying new things. I always hear mixed reviews about cottage cheese, so I decided to give it a try for myself. I had heard from a few colleagues that mixing in fruits, nuts, honey, etc would make it quite tasty. As you can see by my savvy chef skills (opening 2 packages and mixing them into a bowl), I mixed in some berries and honey into my cottage cheese.

Still not exactly sure how I feel about it, it was…..different. The whole time I was trying to decipher what it reminded me of. I came to the conclusion that it was an awkward mixture of cheese and yogurt (both of which I love), but it was caught in a gray area I couldn’t seem to accept. It reminded me of crumbled feta cheese in yogurt, not bad, just weird. Though it’s not my new thing, I’m glad I gave it a try!

What are your thoughts on cottage cheese?

Tofu-phobia

As a vegetarian, you would think Tofu is a staple in my diet. Not so much.

For some reason, I have a fear of Tofu and I don’t know why. I want to like it, I really do, but it just hasn’t happened yet. The texture, consistency (soft, medium hard – weird) colour, shape and taste all add up to a whole lot of fear of the unknown.

BUT, I am not giving up yet! This weekend conquering Tofu is at the top of my to-do list! I plan on educating myself on the different kinds of Tofu, how to drain it and then make something with it that I can actually eat. I feel like I am in grade school again and doing a science experiment- I will report back my findings next week.

How do you eat Tofu?

Pur Bars, Pure Bliss

I used to live for chocolate-y- marshmallow- sweet- might- as- well- be- a- chocolate- bar- granola bars, then I realized I literally was just as well off eating a chocolate bar given all the sugar and carbs in them. I don’t know about you, but sometimes I just want a snack, a good ol’ delicious snack-  preferably in bar form so I feel like its almost a chocolate bar. Thankfully all my dreams came true when a co-worker passed a Pur Bar my way. Delish! Continue reading

I’m a Vegetarian, now what?

I have been a Vegetarian for almost a year and although I don’t desire meat by any means, I do find myself saying  “now what?”, or feeling stuck every now and again. I think this is due to my lack of experimentation with all the delicious foods that I have available to me. I think the most important part of any lifestyle change whether it be dietary or physical activity, educating yourself is key. Educating myself is the main purpose of this blog, a way to hold myself accountable and never stop learning about being a vegetarian (sounds corny, I know).

I have a few favourite go-to websites that I check regularly to keep up to date.
